START STATS
How START Stacks Up
START is having another banner year! Over 4 years, START Bus has grown 72% - the comparable average grew 16% over the same four year period. We averaged 34 other comparable transit systems (with 50 busses or less) and found that over the last three years, START has more riders with less cost to the local government and a better safety record.
Want to see the numbers for yourself? Check out the chart below. The numbers in blue signify START performing above and beyond while the numbers in red need a little explanation. For a readable interpretation of each statistic, scroll past the chart.

Ridership Annual Change
START is growing every year! We've had about 20% more riders every year for the past three years in a row.
Riders per Vehicle Hour
We get more riders on their way each hour than comparable transit systems.
Riders per Vehicle Miles
Our numbers are a little lower than average here because the average from other transit systems was calculated with trips similar to our town shuttle. Our longer Teton Village trip skews the number a bit.
Expenses per Vehicle Hour
START's expenses for each hour the busses are doing their job are just $59.33 while others come in at $76.87.
Expenses per Rider
Each rider costs $3.20.
Government Subsidy per Rider
The government gives transit a helping hand, but their subsidy per rider is down to $2.38 in 2006 compared to $2.75 in 2003.
Local Government Subsidy per Rider
START bus is getting more efficient every year! In 2006, the local government pitches in $.94 per rider down from $1.39 in 2003.
Accidents per 100,000 Miles
Despite our intense winters, START is leading the way in safety. The average is 4.59 accidents per 100,000 miles, but START has only 2.28.
Percent of Runs within 5 minutes of Schedule
Sometimes to be safe during the big snowfalls we need to slow down. 82% of runs are within 5 minutes of the schedule. Our comparison transit systems are in a different weather climate, and they come in at 94%.
Miles between Road Calls
Again, our harsh winter has a big impact on road calls. Start has 8,139 miles before a road call while others run for 10,603.
Load Factor
No empty busses here! Riders occupy 80% of the seats when START is on the road (system wide).
